The Ultimate Guide to Building a Personal Brand and Monetizing Your Expertise

Table of Contents

I know that experts and specialists from various niches, who have a great deal of experience, want to create a systematic flow of clients, automate marketing, show up consistently and sell their digital products and high ticket offers online.

And I also believe that they have their own knowledge on the topics of marketing and sales, which doesn’t bring meaningful results.

The main struggles I hear most often:

1. Post content, but audience doesn’t react
2. Show testimonials from previous clients, but it doesn’t help either
3. Sell offers at the lowest prices on the market, but clients buy offers with a higher price tag from competitors
4. Afraid to raise prices, otherwise all clients will go

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Let’s move on to the main part, where you will find out what steps you need to take to increase income while building a personal brand.

Steps to Monetize Your Expertise Online

I focus on 3 very important points, below you’ll see all the steps to monetize your expertise online.

With this strategy you gonna be ready to market and sell your services, products, courses, consultations, mentorship, etc.

Steps to Monetize Your Expertise Online

1. Brand Direction

1.1 Expertise and personal brand

It starts with expertise analysis. Who you are and why new audience should be interested in your content and offers. Some experts get stuck in the situation when they don’t know what exactly their expertise is. Most of the time they pick a very broad niche. When choosing a niche, it is important to keep your focus. Do one thing, immerse yourself in it in order to learn it as deeply as possible.

Your expertise needs to go in hand with how you present yourself (aka personal brand). Personal brand includes: image, reputation, set of values, work area, anchors, personal style.

1.2 Ideal client avatar

You must understand what your audience will pay you for. You can be an amazing expert and have wonderful offers, but without understanding audience needs, everything can go down the drain.

Describe your ideal client. Write down all the pains, needs and problems of your target audience.

Here are just a few questions that will help you describe your target audience:

  • Area of work
  • Income level
  • The situation they are in
  • Pain points
  • Desires
  • How can you help them?

Do you have the audience that you have in your mind in your followers or email lists?

Your new and existing audience will be divided into 3 segments:

1. The audience, that doesn’t know you and hasn’t bought anything from you yet
2. The audience that knows you, but hasn’t bought yet
3. The audience that has already bought something from you and can be introduced to other offers.

Everyone will have different level of awareness of you and your offers, so you can’t expect, that the same content will work for everyone.

1.3 Competitor analisys

Without this step, you will not create a good offers. Therefore, the analysis of at least 10 competitors will give you an idea of what is on the market and what product is popular in your niche.

Analyze your competitor:

  • What is the main product?
  • What other products are there?
  • Price of the main product
  • What is the main promise?

Knowing your competitors, and how their offers and systems are designed, you can understand:

  • What does the market require and what is in your niche worth paying for?
  • What problems and needs do clients come with?
  • Get ideas for enriching your offers

1.4 Offers suite

Your offers can satisfy the needs of your audience. You don’t need 100,500 products for 10-15 dollars, try to create 2-3 offers that will cover all the needs of your target audience from several hundreds to several thousands of dollars and a low-ticket offer (under 100$) that will introduce more expensive products from your offer suite.

For example:

  • Individual consultation
  • Mentoring
  • Group Coaching
  • Courses
  • Masterclasses
  • Services
  • VIP days

At this stage it is important to create your own offer suite, without it, you are losing clients and profits.

Make your offers ‘one of a kind’. There is competition in any niche. A unique selling proposition (USP) will help you stand out from your competitors. Leadership and strengthening your position in the market is determined by the ability to find and close the true needs of the client, to offer what others do not have.

2. Customer Journey Map and Funnel

Successful businesses know that it’s not just about selling your offers, it’s about building long-term and trusting relationships with clients, so that they keep returning and recommending your brand to their friends. However, to do this, any difficulties and problems that could negatively affect the customer experience should be eliminated.

The CJM reflects the entire customer journey – from the creating the need and the first entry to the brand’s website, to providing the best experience or a repeat purchases. There are 6 major steps in total: Problem Awareness, Search for information, Analysis of alternatives, Purchase, Experience, Post-purchase.

Customer Journey Map and Funnel

Look at your business from your client’s buying journey perspective to see the areas in your funnel you can improve.

Bonus tip:

Here’s how you can start getting Attention and warm up your audience with organic content:

1. Show that there is a big problem in the situation they are at
2. Show what kind of consequences this problem has.
3. Show how you dealt with the problem
4. Show how you live without this problem
5. Show how you helped other people solve this problem
6. Encourage your audience to take one small step to resolve the problem (suggest to download/watch your lead magnet or buy a low-ticket offer).

3. Branding, Website, Sales Page

Visual presentation of your brand can make or brake your sales, because we form our first impression based on what we see. I personally know people who wouldn’t buy anything from the website that screams “Please, update me!” or wouldn’t follow on social media if a content looks messy and chaotic.

There’s a lot of competitors out there. Cohesive, memorable and pleasant for eyes visuals are necessity nowadays! Investing in branding means you care about the details, from client’s perspective it means you’ll gonna take care of them and pay attention to their problems and solutions too.

Define your brand look and mood and use free or buy designer templates or hire designer to make all the necessary marketing materials and web pages to support your client’s buying journey and your funnel.

  • Social media branded designs
  • Lead magnets (freebies) and opt-in web pages to collect emails.
  • Sales pages for your offers
  • Website to show all your offers, set up shop pages, and blogging platform.
